Raw Cacao and Health: The ControversyI have been aware of Paul Nison's negative writing about cacao and his blogs on it for a couple years now, as well as many other raw food personalities who are against its consumption. I have also had my own experiences with Raw Cacao/Chocolate over the years, but for the first three years or so that I was raw (beginning in 1999), raw cacao was not even on the market yet or part of the raw lifestyle. There are two main issues with Raw Cacao that people need to understand before making up their own mind, and my years of experience as a raw food vegan gives me a good perspective on the raw cacao issue.ONE: The first few years I was raw, raw cacao was not yet available and I was fine without it!So we certainly don't need it!TWO: NOT ALL CACAO IS THE SAMEYou have to make sure you are gettting high quality, pure raw chocolate. Otherwise it is contaminated with molds, and then you get people complaining of its negative effects due to the mold contaminants, (not to mention all the other nasty contaminants he mentions and are surely found in many cacao imported products out there from companies that do not have integrity over their product control.)Furthermore, recently it was discovered that most of the raw cacao on the market is not truly raw and of a lesser, hybridized variety. However, since this was discovered, many companies have since shaped-up and our now offering truly raw, non-hybridized (uncontaminated with CCN51 lesser/hybridized variety) cacao. But still, beware, as not all companies are offering truly raw cacao and a majority on the market is likely contaminated with the CCN51 genes. We sell the native-born heirloom Ecuadorian Arriba Nacional-Fino de Aroma from Ultimate Superfoods and Big Tree Farms, who believe that hybridization and heat greatly compromises quality and one of their key concerns is preserving this species and promoting its cultivation and its nutrients through sun drying rather than roasting. This variety and production of Cacao is considered worldwide to have the finest floral aroma and flavor profile, as well as, the highest amount of bioavailable nutrients and minerals. THREE: CACAO IS A SPECIAL TREAT/DELICACY, LIKE GREEN TEA OR A FINE DESSERT, TO BE EATEN IN SMALL AMOUNTS.Cacao is a stimulant, similliar to Green Tea, although without caffeine. It contains its own similiar stimulant though, theobromine. Theobromine is actually much better for you than caffeine, and metabolizes quickly in our body (although not in an animal, which is why it can kill your dog!)The very first time I started using cacao, back in 2004/5, I would put in in my morning smoothies and bring in to college classes with me. Interestingly enough, during this time I also developed some sleeping issues and anxiety issues that I had never had before. No one had come-out about the negative effects of raw cacao yet, but now that I look back, I am certain that my issues were partially due to the cacao. Luckily, I was never that into the cacao and didn't keep eating much of it. It wasn't until fall 2007 and spring 2008, while working very hard on planning my wedding and on a book I was wrtiting, periods of studying and long (unnatural) work in front of the computer, and all night births (I'm a certifed Doula and Midwife Assistant), that I brought it back into my life. Occasionally I would have negative effects, but for the most part, I was only eating tiny amounts once in awhile and it seemed more helpful then harmful. I would add 1 Tablespoon maybe to a large amount of goji berries, coconut butter, almond butter, strawberries, etc. So I only got a very little at a time, and this would be a rare treat as well. In Novemeber 2008 however. we started purchasing cacao nibs and cacao beans after I went to a lecture with 30-year raw foodist Lou Corona, where he talked about making chocolate yogurt from fermenting cacao beans. He seemed to be replying to people's comments about the over-stimulating effect they get from eating too much cacao. Maybe the fermentation process removes some of the chemicals; it definititely removes the negative molds. I tried making the yogurt and it was interesting. Eventually I got to where I was eating way too many cacao nibs out of laziness, and started having sleepless nights and mental issues. But I knew right away that it was the cacao and stopped taking it and started experimenting with Colloidial Gold at the same time (which gives one an amazing sleep!) Even if it was at 7am that I ate a couple small pieces of cacao candy, I still wouldn't be able to sleep that night! Not being able to sleep was quite destructive to my life, so I learned the hard way to not even allow myself one bite- or else! A few times a year I would fall off the wagon and have a piece of candy or something, and sometimes I'd be fine, but othertimes it would have a negative effect. So from Nov. 2008-until May 2010, cacao was a rare treat in my life. Then in spring 2010, I learned that anything from the cacao fruit can cause Estrogen Dominance (bloating and breast tenderness, acne, low sex-drive, depression, sleeplessness, resteless leg syndrome, inability to lose weight etc.), so I have given up any kind of chocolate for good basically. All chocolate, even cacao butter, disturbs hormone balance big time, so it is no longer a part of my life. Other stimulants do the same thing, for example, 2 cups of coffee will increase your estradiol levels by 70% according to a Bringham Young University Study! Once I learned how powerful it is in screwing up your hormones, I completely gave it up for good. I finally just got over cacao all together and don't crave it at all, which is weird because I used to love it. But now that my hormones are more balanced and I sleep great and feel great on my yoga and living foods, I have no desire for it. Personally, I have been the happiest and the most blissful in my life when I am eating very little food period, all living of course, and without any Cacao or Tea or similar stimulants, while doing a lot of yoga. In other words, living in the highest state of purity. I love being able to eat so simply and purely, and more than that, eat very very little, without any annoying stimulants. I am also very lucky that I never ate a ton of the stuff or did it long term. BUT THIS IS ONLY MY EXPERIENCE, BE YOUR OWN GURU, AND JUST KNOW THAT IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE A FOOD BUT A TREAT! LIKE ALL SUPERFOODS, CACAO SHOULD BE EATEN IN SMALL QUANTITIES, B/C THE BODY ONLY NEEDS A TINY AMOUNT AND THE REST WILL SIMPLY GO TO WASTE.

Not rated yet My husband ate it througout law school, and loved how it activates his brain and mood and made him a more successful student. I would agree that one probably needs a healthy drug to get through law school!!! Many would say that you can't put the words healthy and drug together, but it all depends on how it is used and with what conciousness. So the moral of the story is, just don't eat cacao like you eat lettuce O.K., and do what is right for your life! Just like you wouldn't eat pounds of green tea every day, one should not have pounds of chocolate every day. Just like I wouldn't have green tea while i was pregnant, i wouldn't eat cacao while i was pregnant etc......People need to be aware of how much they eat. I know of a mother who every time she would eat raw cacao while she was pregnant, the baby would move around too much, so she stopped eating it during the second half of her pregnancy. We are all different!Every person is different as well. Others can drink green tea every day and notice no problem, while I absolutely cannot. It depends on your state of dietary purity and "rawness" for sure, and the purer your diet and life is, the less you will handle or even desire in the first place such stimulants, because as Dr. Clement says in the audio below, your joy is from you life, you don't need to get it from chemicals. I have been very pure vegan raw foodist since 1999, so obviously I am going to be more sensitive then your average person. So just be aware and don't over do it or else, like Dr. T says in another video/audio below, you will be making your kidneys, and liver over-work! And if you really want to be a purest, then its best to remove such uneccesary items from one's diet. The only purests however that I know are long time people in the raw food community. Beware however of your "raw guru," as I have noticed one thing in the raw community, and that is that teachers and long time practioners often try to gain popularity and attention by trying to figure out something new to make a stir about, and I really feel that this raw cacao thing is just another one of those moments. That doesn't mean that they don't have some good information to provide, but just remember to be your own guru and live your own life and do what is right for you. Remember the body is constantly changing and what is right in one moment, may feel wrong in another, and everyone's brain chemistry and constitution is different (and different at different times too!!!) That is why at times in the past I was able to eat some cacao and have no ill effects, when at other times it totally messed up my life. For example, if you are still eating cooked food and drinking caffeine or coffee, then this is not as big of an issue for you. Also, keep in mind, raw cacao is generally much better for you than coffee. Cacao does not cause insulin to be released, where as caffeine does, especially coffee. BUT, similiar to coffee and other stimulants, even just one dose can really mess up your hormones because ANY kind of chocolate, raw or not, increases estradiol just like coffee. We are all at different places in our diet and need different things at different times. Just be aware and treat cacao like you would any other drug, but also realize that ALL food is a drug because it ALL has mental and bodily effects and consequences. It's just that cacao is going to have a lot more drug effects than say, lettuce, so beware, as it is certainly more addictive. More than that, it is addictive due to the sweeteners people use on it, not just the cacao itself. Remember how addicted we all are to sugars and desserts, and cacao simply fills in that cooked food addiction from our past....it gives us the sugar and dessert quality we crave...with a much nicer stimulant effect thought that really lasts! Cacao also balances the blood sugar. Remember that Agave is not truly raw, and has similar effects to corn syrup in the body. So if you are going to really examine your whole diet, you need to look at more than just cacao. If you really want to be a purest, then we have a lot more to talk about then just the cacao you are eating. Here is Dr. T's video:
and here is the video/audio from Paul Nison's blogpost by Dr. Clement:
I really enjoy what Dr. Clement has to say, but he is a purest and so has every right to talk like one. The truth is both Agave and Cacao are both recreational activities, not something you should be eating all the time. Please though have some perspective, if you are eating Agave in place of white sugar and bread, then you are taking a step in a good direction. Eating a little cacao once in a while is no different than having coffee or green tea once in awhile, and is actually much better for you than either of those. Are you a purest? ConclusionI think our culture's largest addiction is to food period, and people are also way too depressed in general. So if people use some cacao at the beginning of their journey to better health and towards a positive mind state, then this is a positive thing. Cacao has really been a positive force for many people on their journey to eating less and eating better, and definitely to being more positive and feeling better. We also live in a culture where so many people are literally taking drugs for depression, and these are a lot worse for you than raw cacao. Let's be honest with ourselves too about how unnatural modern life is to begin with, and ask ourselves honestly how perfect, non-toxic, and pure our diet and lifestyle really is before we try and disparage raw cacao. Finally, lets remember all the amazing POSITIVE scientific studies done on raw chocolate, and all the positive effects seen by specialists like Dr. Gabriel Cousens for improving diabetics blood sugar etc....and all the tremendous positive nutrients cacao has. It is after all just the nut of a fruit. As with ALL foods, and ALL things we consume, we should be aware of how they effect us, and make a decision for ourselves how we utilize them in our lives for OUR OWN PURPOSE. It is no different with cacao. Return from Raw Cacao and Health to read more about Raw Cacao's positive nutrients and history... |
